When & why did you join Get Ahead VA:  I joined the Get Ahead VA team in October 2016.  I am a full-time freelance content writer and PR consultant and wanted to share my experience with Get Ahead VA and our clients.

What did you do before you joined Get Ahead VA:  Immediately before going full-time freelance, I was the Senior Content Manager for an integrated marketing agency in Leamington Spa.  However, I haven’t always specialised in commercial copywriting and content marketing.

I started my writing career at the age of 17, after landing my first job as a trainee reporter for my local newspaper.  After spending six years in journalism, which also included TV and radio reporting, I decided to take my writing and communications skills and apply them to the world of public sector corporate communications – local government communications in particular.  Six years later, I moved back into the private sector where I account managed several high-profile PR accounts, including Arriva Buses, PwC, Harvester, Westfield and the BBC’s Digital Switchover, before moving into the field of commercial copywriting.

I also currently volunteer for charity organisation Cats Protection as a PR officer. This allows me to put my skills to good use for a cause I feel passionately about.  I write local and regional press releases for the charity, as well as giving PR guidance and advice.

Career highlight to date:  Having the courage and self-belief to set up my own freelance business, which can be an extremely daunting thing to do after spending almost two decades working for employers!  I thought I would ease myself into it gradually, but it has been extremely busy since I started, which is a sign I made the right decision.  I wish I had done it sooner!  I am also very proud to be NCTJ and CIPR-qualified and HubSpot-certified – these qualifications really endorse my experience.

Plans for the future:  To continue to expand my client portfolio and provide my clients with the best possible service and best possible results.
