When starting a business it can be baffling to know where to start. You have your great idea, but how do you turn it into reality and what do you need to get you there? It can feel like money is pouring out of your bank account left, right and centre, but there are ways you can be selective with your savings, whilst still ensuring you have the right tools for the job.
Any business needs some kind of equipment whether it is product or service related and it can be tempting to use a new business as an excuse to rush out and buy new everything. Of course the business must have a separate laptop, mobile, tablet, office space – the works!
Certainly it can be helpful to separate business equipment (and often therefore information) from personal equipment right from the start. This is particularly important when it comes to things like tax returns and accounts. Being clear what is and is not a business cost (such as the purchase of a new laptop) is vital and some of these costs can be off set against tax.
However, keeping start-up costs as low as possible will enable you to invest the funds you have most effectively and ensure you generate returns from your business quicker. You might find that you do need a separate laptop straight away, but can manage with your existing smart phone and simply add your new email account to it. With any purchase it pays to think ahead about how you might use the equipment – are you likely to have to carry any computer around to meetings for presentations? In which case a 2-in-1 convertible laptop might give you the best of both worlds – a tablet for on the move and a laptop for at home or office use. Is any computer simply to be used for emails, Word documents, Excel and the odd presentation? Therefore you can probably manage with a smaller, lower capacity laptop or desktop and don’t need the latest super whizzy processers.
