Playday is the national day for play in the UK and this year’s event takes place today on Wednesday 3 August.
On Playday, thousands of children and their families get out to play at hundreds of community events across the UK. As well as a celebration of children’s right to play, Playday is a campaign that highlights the importance of play in children’s lives.
The #Playday2016 campaign theme is ‘Play matters’, calling on everyone to help make sure that children and young people across the UK have the time, freedom and space to play more. Whilst an important campaign for the health and wellbeing of the younger generation, what has Playday got to do with business?
Playday got us thinking about the importance of having fun, getting outside and tapping into our inner child. We are all big kids after all! Running your own business or managing one can be highly stressful. You might end up feeling chained to the desk – that everything falls to you. Sometimes a business that started out as a bit of fun can end up feeling like anything but fun. But taking time out to ‘play’ is vital for our children’s development and it could be important for your business development too.
Stepping away from the day to day, taking in fresh air can be inspiring and invigorating, allowing you to return to work with a fresh new perspective. If we are not having fun that can easily come across to our customers and prospects. Generally, people that are happy are more engaging and more successful. People want to work with others who seem to enjoy what they do. So making time to ‘play’ and have fun could be an important opportunity for your company.
Of course as adults we might not choose to climb trees, go on a woodland adventure or bounce on a bouncy castle. Play might be getting out for a walk, going to the beach or simply stopping for a drink and a catch up with a friend. However we choose to play, try to leave work behind and enjoy having fun.
