Are you showing your business enough love?

Are you showing your business enough love?

Love is certainly in the air as Valentine’s Day approaches this weekend. The shops are full of roses and hearts and inspiration for all the different ways we can show our husbands, wives, boyfriends and friends … and even the dog how much we care. But do we show our businesses enough love? Sometimes as a small business owner it can feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders.

What is a Virtual Marketing Agency?

What is a Virtual Marketing Agency?

Here at Get Ahead VA we are delighted to be launching what we call our ‘virtual marketing agency’. But what does that actually mean and does it matter to you? Sometimes the words ‘marketing agency’ can create fear in the eyes of a small business owner. You immediately see pound signs and something you don’t feel you could afford. But as we all know, ways of working in the 21st century have changed. Virtual and flexible working are much more commonplace. Look at how our high streets have changed and the way we shop. Gone are some of the expensive, bricks and mortar shops with high rental overheads and nimble, dynamic online alternatives have arrived, offering similar or better services at a fraction of the cost and in a flexible format to suit you.

3 reasons not to be blue this Blue Monday!

3 reasons not to be blue this Blue Monday!

Today Monday 18th January, the third Monday of January, is known as Blue Monday. A tradition started in the US, Blue Monday falls at a time when a combination of wintry weather, Christmas debts and broken New Year resolutions see many of us feeling at our lowest. But do not despair! We all know that negative thoughts are not good for ourselves or our businesses. They can leave us low in confidence and creativity.

Why size really does matter for PR images

Why size really does matter for PR images

Journalists are busy people, bombarded with story ideas and press releases every day. For your news story to stand out and get noticed it needs to get many things right – be relevant, specific, interesting enough, with a catchy headline etc. It also needs to have the right images. Not having the right images can make or break that once in a lifetime opportunity to get your brand featured across the local, national or even international news.

Self Assessment - 3 weeks to go!

Self Assessment - 3 weeks to go!

2016 may only be a week old but the annual Self Assessment Tax deadline is already looming for some. If you run your own business and are registered self-employed you may need to submit a tax return online, along with other people who are required to file returns such as those whose annual income is over £100,000 per year, who have Capital Gains Tax to pay, who live abroad or who are trustees. The deadline for filing online is Sunday 31st January so now is the time to get it ticked off your ‘to do’ list if you haven’t already.

What is your top priority for 2016?

2016 is already underway and you may well be back to work brimming with ideas and enthusiasm to take your business to the next level over the next 12 months. 6 things to consider for 2016

Top tips for managing the Christmas shutdown

Top tips for managing the Christmas shutdown

For some businesses Christmas and New Year is the busiest time of year, with all hands on deck to maximise this vital revenue window. But for other businesses it is a time where they try and take a well-earned break. It can be a quieter period with less new business enquiries, fewer orders to process and many staff requests for holiday, leaving a skeleton team to man the office – or none at all. If you and your colleagues are planning a few days off to spend time with family then here are our tops tips for making sure your Christmas shut down runs smoothly.

Small Business Saturday - 1st Dec 2015

Small Business Saturday - 1st Dec 2015

Small businesses across the country are poised to maximise a fantastic sales opportunity this Saturday 5th December, on Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday started 3 years ago to highlight the vital role that small businesses play on our high streets and in our economy. Small businesses represent a large number of businesses in this country as well as delivering employment, tax revenues and other community benefits. Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots campaign, which sets out to highlight the importance of small businesses and encourage consumers to ‘shop local’, supporting small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, and falls in contrast to the big discounting by major retailers on the increasing phenomenon of Black Friday weekend at the end of November.

What's your favourite colour?

What's your favourite colour?

What’s your favourite colour? It’s a question you might have asked each other as children but it actually has significance when it comes to business too. The colours you pick to reflect your company can make a big difference to your success (or failure).

Consistency is key

Consistency is key

Many business owners spend considerable amounts of time and effort on developing new branding, or rebranding their businesses. Resources are poured into the finer details of colour, typeface, size and symbols, ensuring that everything is perfect. But where many businesses fall down is the implementation of that branding.

What's in a logo?

What's in a logo?

When you are starting up your own business there are so many things to think about; your company name, website address, tax and ownership status, pricing and product range. Your logo or company identity is one of the things on a long list that can sometimes get overlooked. Does it really matter? It can be tempting to scrimp on this and simply use your business name or create something yourself but an expertly designed logo can move your business to an entirely more professional and successful level.

Bespoke Christmas Cards For Your Business

Bespoke Christmas Cards For Your Business

With less than 8 weeks to go till Christmas, now is the time to start thinking about how your business is going to celebrate. Thanking your customers with Christmas cards, gifts or entertainment can be a good way to end the year on a positive note – and start 2016 in style. Christmas cards are sometimes a topic of debate. Should you use charitable cards? Or should you go for e-greetings and a charitable donation? There are good arguments for both options however many companies still choose the route of bespoke Christmas cards – allowing you to make a strong branded message as well as a personalised thank you to your customers and suppliers.

Healthy office snacks to keep you going all day!

Healthy office snacks to keep you going all day!

As the weather gets cold and wet our food thoughts turn to Sunday roasts and apple crumble. Cosy afternoons with crumpets and cake in front of the fire. But with a Christmas party dress to fit into in a couple of months’ time, now might not be the right time to overindulge. It can be all too tempting to tuck into biscuits and cake during the day, particularly when you are working from home. But we all know these types of snacks can give you a quick sugar high, but not the sustained energy release you need to keep your brain buzzing right through the day.

Fall back this weekend!

Fall back this weekend!

This Sunday morning at 2am the clocks ‘fall back’ as British Summer Tine comes to an end on October 25th. This may allow you an extra hour in bed on Sunday morning - or perhaps an extra hour to cram in more work on your business? The time change does signify the return of lighter mornings for a while so a good reason to consider an early morning walk to get your creative juices flowing before you start work. Though darker evenings may encourage more time to sit at your desk with less distractions of sunny evenings and tempting visits to the park, or pubs by the river.

This can benefit both us and our clients, but there are also times when we need to make sure we stay on the right side of professional.

Mobile vs Landline - which is best for your business?

Mobile vs Landline - which is best for your business?

When it comes to choosing a contact number for your business, many small business owners debate between landline and mobile. Especially for sole traders and freelancers, a mobile number may seem the most sensible option. You are likely to be out and about delivering your services, meeting with clients and networking. The time you actually spend at your ‘desk’ may be minimal and so clients are much more likely to reach you if they call your mobile.

There appears to be no hard and fast list of the best, though those that often come up include ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change’ by Stephen R. Covey, ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie and ‘Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't’ by James C. Collins. We particularly like the sound of ‘The 4–Hour Work Week’ by Tim Ferriss!

3 things not to do on your Twitter profile!

For many businesses social media is a key part of keeping in touch with their customers. Twitter in particular can be incredibly effective as a business tool and used in all sorts of ways – from customer relationship management to sourcing. Like all social media tools it is completely public and whilst it can be a major asset, it needs to be managed wisely. Every tweet is on the worldwide web for everyone to see, so you need to make sure it is appropriate, in line with your overall company objectives and the business image you are trying to portray online.

Super breakfasts for the self employed!

Super breakfasts for the self employed!

25-31st January 2015 is Breakfast Week and the theme this year is ‘Shake Up Your Wake Up’, encouraging all of us to enjoy a healthy breakfast every day. The health benefits of eating breakfast are well proven, with the NHS telling us that "Eating breakfast has long term health benefits. It can reduce obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes." Yet many of us choose to skip breakfast – citing lack of time as one of the biggest reasons. Particularly when we are self-employed, time is money and it’s easy to reach for the laptop the minute we get out of bed.

Self Assessment deadline is fast approaching

Self Assessment deadline is fast approaching

January 31st is looming! For self-employed individuals filing online tax returns the deadline for submission is just a couple of weeks away so if you haven’t already got yours completed then there really is no time to waste. You can complete your tax return yourself or engage the services of an accountant or bookkeeper to do it for you. Whichever way you do it, you’ll still need to have the vital information for tax year 6th April 2013 - 5th April 2014 ready:

5 ways to beat the blues this Blue Monday

5 ways to beat the blues this Blue Monday

‘Blue Monday’ is the name given to the Monday of the last full week of January each year and is said to be the most depressing day of the year. A combination of the arrival of Christmas bills, the broken New Year’s resolutions and cold, dark days is said to make Monday 19th 2015 a day to forget, not remember.

Are you ready to start 2015 in style?

Are you ready to start 2015 in style?

Some business owners and entrepreneurs are excellent planners. They have their business futures mapped out at least 18 months in advance and will already be thinking about 2016, not 2015. For other small business owners and freelancers planning is something that happens as they go along – something that is always on the ‘to-do’ list but that they never quite get round to.

Goodbye and thank you to a record breaking 2014!

Over the year we have helped over 70 entrepreneurs, self-employed professionals and small business owners to get back to what they do best by taking on the tasks they don’t have time to do, don’t have the skills to do, or simply don’t want to do. We have been delighted to welcome many new clients – from logistics companies to live in carers they have all recognised the value that outsourcing can deliver.

How Mentoring Could Change Your Business

How Mentoring Could Change Your Business

Using a mentor can be a fantastic way to help drive your business forwards. People use mentors for all sorts of reasons – for help and guidance when starting up a new business, for enabling them to translate the clear vision they may have for their business into action, or to help them find answers when things aren’t going to plan.

What makes the perfect call answering service?

What makes the perfect call answering service?

As many small businesses and entrepreneurs know, you can’t be in two places at once, however hard you try. You might want to be out networking and promoting your services – or delivering your services to your clients and it could be that exact moment when a new prospect calls. Although some prospects will try again, in some cases they will simply move on to the next person on their list and that opportunity has been lost. To help avoid this many small businesses use telephone answering services – simple, effective solutions that ensure phone calls are not missed and opportunities can be captured. But what makes a great call answering service? There are many providers out there and it can be difficult to know which to choose. From the cheapest to the most expensive, as with buying any service we encourage you to shop around, check the small print and try and experience the service for yourself.

Guest Blog: Timewasting, tempers, mishaps and pranks

After dealing with a few recent cases with our clients this month, we’ve decided to point our lens at the mishaps and misuse of equipment in the workplace and the minefield that so called ‘office pranks’ bring. Workplace equipment can be any tool that an employee uses to get the job done and sometimes people can get it very wrong. We’ve compiled a list of possible and real workplace equipment mishaps below, with some top tips about how to ensure your staff stay safe and that your, sometimes, very expensive equipment remains in one piece:

Startups: What equipment do you need for your business?

When starting a business it can be baffling to know where to start. You have your great idea, but how do you turn it into reality and what do you need to get you there? It can feel like money is pouring out of your bank account left, right and centre, but there are ways you can be selective with your savings, whilst still ensuring you have the right tools for the job.

How to disavow bad links

Link building was once an important part of SEO of the past and there was a time when any link to your website was worth having. The key now is to have useful, credible links from influential websites and poor quality links may actually be harming your Google rankings.

Word of mouth recommendation is still one of the most effective marketing tools for your business, even in our 21st century, digital economy. Celebrating International Youth Day

Celebrating International Youth Day

International Youth Day takes place on 12th August 2014 and is designated by the United Nations as a day to celebrate the role of young men and women in society across the world. Here in the UK, the contribution of youth is an important topic. Youth unemployment hit the headlines back in 2011 when it passed over 1 million and there was talk of a ‘lost generation’. Since then youth unemployment has dropped, but there are still enthusiastic, keen young men and women out there who are looking to make a positive contribution to society.

Right to flexible working extended to all employees

Flexible working has hit the headlines again over the past few weeks as the Government extended the legal right to request flexible working to all employees on 30th June 2014. Previously the right was only available to parents and carers. In order to be eligible employees much have worked for the same employer for at least 26 weeks and can only make one request per year.

How to transform your small business into a systematic operation

How to transform your small business into a systematic operation

As a small business owner or entrepreneur the tendency is always to do everything for yourself. Your business is your baby and you have built it up from the start. It is your ideas – your creativeness, passion – and your money! But for many businesses there lies a tipping point – a stage of growth at which they can no longer manage by themselves and they need to introduce a more systematic approach.

There is much talk at the moment about 23rd July – the start of the school holidays (for most) and for some businesses it would seem that the end is nigh. There is gnashing of teeth about how mumpreneurs, start-ups and small businesses – anyone running their business around their families or small businesses employing parents of school age children will cope. How to keep the business going without 9-3 childcare? How to manage the costs of summer camps? How to prepare for the endless ‘I’m bored …’ and the predictable English summer rain?

How to use lists on Twitter

Twitter can be an excellent tool for many businesses but with millions of Twitter accounts out there it can be difficult to keep track. There are a number of tools provided by Twitter to keep you keep track and Lists are a particular favourite of ours. Lists are simple and easy to use, enabling you to organise the accounts you are following and quickly access their tweets.

How To Dress For The Home Office

Did you know that Friday 20th June is National Fit Flop day in America? This got us thinking about business dress and the debate about whether flip flops are ever acceptable work wear or not. Love it or loathe it? The one minute networking pitch

Love it or loathe it? The one minute networking pitch

Many entrepreneurs and small businesses make networking an important part of their customer acquisition strategy. It stems from that vital first step of most sales models – raising Awareness. For some, networking comes naturally but for others having to stand up in front of a big group of people and talk about yourself or what you do can be a terrifying prospect. There are lots of different types of networking meetings available so it is worth trying a few to find out those that suit you best – both in terms of the types of businesses there (and therefore potential clients) as well as the style of networking – the number of people there, how introductions work etc.

How accounting packages can help SMEs crunch the numbers

As a start up or small business, numbers mean the difference between success and failure. Managing your cash flow as well as your overall costs is key to ensuring your great idea turns in to an even better, sustainable business. Once you are up and running, managing your accounting is vital – not least for yourself in terms of managing your business but also to be sure you are ready for the tax man – having the information at your fingertips for your self-employment or company tax return.
